Hummingbird is a genus of apodiform birds belonging to the troquiline subfamily (Trochilinae). The genus groups five species with a mainly neotropical distribution.

Description
The species that make up the genus Colibrí have a size that ranges between 9.5 and 15 cm, and a weight of 4.8 to 8.5 g. Although they are small birds, they are not the smallest, since they belong to the genus Mellisuga. They have a broad, forked or rounded tail. The bill is black and thin, relatively long and curved, and they have a long, tubular-shaped tongue. The plumage of three of the four species is mainly green or light gray. Males have a purple-blue spot running back and down the eye (the feathers of which are raised when excited) and a bright patch on the throat. The plumage of the females resembles that of the males, but the ear and throat patches are smaller.

They build cup-shaped nests with the remnants of threads, branches, and feathers molded by tongue and ramming. They usually lay 2 white eggs. While incubating, they are aggressively territorial and prevent snooping by other birds, including the same species, in the vicinity of the nest.

Although many die during their first year of life, especially in the vulnerable period between incubation and the time of leaving the nest, those that survive live an average of 3 to 4 years.
